AMI Healthcare Potluck Event

On May 2nd, 2026, we held MedPathNE’s first community event, which took place at the American Muslim Institute in Omaha, Nebraska. The event was a healthcare seminar compounded with a potluck, featuring electrophysiologist Dr. Hussam Abuissa and nutritionist Zeina El Zein Renno giving educational presentations on cardiovascular and dietary health. With Rakan Abuissa and the board’s history with the Muslim community in Omaha, we felt that the AMI was the perfect place to enjoy both food and healthcare.

To begin, Dr. Hussam Abuissa opened the stage with an in-depth presentation on how important it is to take care of your cardiovascular health. His credentials back him up, as he has been in the field for more than 20 years, and he is the medical director of the cardiovascular team at CUMC CHI Bergan Mercy Hospital. He emphasized the significance of weekly exercise, whether it is cardio or weightlifting, and he also warned against habits such as drinking and smoking. Following his slide deck, he took questions from the crowd, which led to him speaking on the dangers of PEDs and his motivations for becoming a cardiologist. To wrap up his presentation, Dr. Abuissa presented a quote that has stuck with him his whole life: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

Next, health and fitness specialist Zeina el Zein Renno built on Dr. Abuissa’s speech by presenting the need to maintain a healthy diet and follow an exercise regimen. A cross-fit coach in Omaha, Nebraska, Zeina is very experienced in helping out her clients make dietary choices that lead to a healthier lifestyle. She began by going over the basics of what constitutes exercise and how often one should be doing it, then she spoke about popular foods and their nutritional values. Following her presentation, she displayed multiple-choice questions on the screen, rewarding whoever got the most right with a free training session at her gym!

Following the presentations by the two speakers, all 100+ guests feasted on the food that was brought by their peers. It was a great way to capitalize on the health presentations that had just been given, and it would have been even better if the food provided was as healthy as the speakers advised. Nonetheless, everybody had a great time, and it was the perfect way for MedPathNE to begin their history of community-based events!
